The Biden administration tried to make the case on Thursday that Hamas would gain more influence over captive negotiations and gain more common support if Israel launched a provocative assault on Hamas in Rafah.
As Israel prepares to confront the last four Hamas battalions in a city regarded as the last stronghold of the criminal organization in the Gaza Strip, Israel launched a limited function in Rafah this year, close to the Egyptian border.
According to Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the State Department, an Israeli military campaign in Rafah had “indirectly weaken” Israel’s security. He added that he did not specify what those choices were when the United States presented Israel with” a whole variety of policy choices” that would allow them to end Hamas without bringing them into Rafah.
Asked whether President Joe Biden’s announcement that the U. S. was withholding weapons from Israel would undermine Israel’s leverage in hostage negotiations, Miller said that “has n’t been our assessment” of the talks.
According to the Times of Israel, John Kirby, a spokeswoman for the White House’s regional stability, made similar claims:
” Any significant ground activity against Rafah, not Israel’s, would actually enhance Hamas’s position at the table.” That’s our view”, Kirby says in a lecture with investigators.
The White House spokesman claims that if I’m Mr. Sinwar and I’m sitting down in my tunnel and witnessing honest folks being victim to major battle activities in Rafah, I have less of a desire to enter the negotiation room.
Kirby did not make clear whether Hamas’s desire to cause more civilian fatalities or whether it was out of frustration at civilian casualties led to Hamas’s lack of motivation to relieve Jewish hostages if more Israeli civilians perished.
What kind of attack may be made by the White House in Rafah?
