Speaker Mike Johnson ( R- LA ) praised House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries ( D- NY ) in an interview with , Politico, saying that he and the Democrat leader have “more in common than people might think”.
Johnson said about Jeffries:
I have. Hakeem is a decent person. We’ve worked nicely up. We share a lot more with one another than most folks may assume. You know, he’s from New York and I’m from Louisiana. I believe you can enjoy people for who they are as a man, despite our frequent disagreements over policies and their core principles. I think that’s what we’re called to accomplish. And we both type of agree on that. I find it admirable that he leads a decent community. In that respect, we have a lot in common. And he lost his father late, I lost mine three times before I got elected to Congress. We’ve talked about that.
…
And I think what we’ve learned about one another is that Hakeem Jeffries is telling me the truth when he tells me everything. He is, in my opinion, true to his word. And I believe he also thinks the same about me. That’s a huge factor in Washington. You know, confidence is a rare commodity around these. ]Emphasis added]
Johnson even said that he has found it “really stimulating” to know that Jeffries is” shooting right”.

Politico continued:
Johnson is enjoying a period of renewed respect, especially now that it has been difficult to avoid a stoppage and has been working to get aid to Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine. The majority of House Republicans are now more irritated with far-right supporters of Johnson’s struggle than with him. Liberals saved him from a movement to resign because of his consistent act of good government.
Politico , also , wrote , that Johnson was able to “neuter” Trump during the final stages of the foreign aid debate and oppose Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s ( R- GA ) move to oust Johnson as the leader of the House.
