Viewpoint: In contrast, pro- Arab students are able to include displays for weeks without disturbance
After Northwestern University College Republicans ‘ pro-Israel show was only up for five days this weekend, one or more persons in EVANSTON, Illinois, did not change our support.
In show of support for Israel and Hebrew students, students from the school’s College Republicans and Young Americans for Freedom gathered on Deering Meadow on Sunday in front of the Deering Library.
In response to the earlier pro-Palestinian encampment on the same yard, we made the decision to express our support for Israel immediately. Relics of the camp— including trash, tents, and various camping equipment — are still there.
The school had just recently ordered the tents to be removed, despite the fact that the anti-Israel screen had been up for weeks. Following many agreements, including full-ride scholarships to Israeli students, this occurred.
Our symbol show was put up around 7 p. m. No perhaps five hours later, at evening, we noticed the screen had been vandalized. The majority of the flags were torn down or covered before being replaced with banners and Arab flags. What appears to be heart was sprayed on the rest of the American and Israeli colors.
Particularly disturbing to me is how body appears on the American and Israeli banners. Colors are not just items, they are images of their countries ‘ land – wars fought, freedoms earned, and financial successes, among other things.
Monday night, a few devoted College Republicans individuals cleaned up the display’s symbol. Though most of the colors were never recovered, part of the show was able to be salvaged.
We decided to remove the advertisements and replace some of the flags from Israel and the United States because of the symbolic significance of the flags.
Through the Associated Student Government, school Republican lodged a complaint about the theft at Northwestern University.
Northwestern University should be educating students about love and protecting free speech for all, not just those who support Hamas.
Unlike those involved in the camp, my party complied with the limitations of the school’s rules and policies. Our unwavering support for Israel was demonstrated in a calm manner.
The Arab encampment was informed by President Michael Schill that “every conduct on Deering and across campus may adhere to all University rules and policies,” and that the agreement included the immediate removal of tents on Deering Meadow, the cessation of non-approved use of enhanced sound. Schill grants them access to the camp until June 1 with the problem that this agreement is followed.
The campers at the encampment did not follow the agreement, and they also presumably ( with cause ) vandalized the flag display in support of their adversary with flagrant disregard and disrespect for the First Amendment.
Someone on this school had to speak up and speak up for Israel and Jewish students because they did not remove tents or cease with the enhanced sound as they had agreed.
The group of College Republicans and Young Americans for Freedom was that person.
We will continue to support Israel despite criminals who may harm our freedom of speech.
