MERIDA, Mexico ( AP ) — Eleven people have been killed in mass shootings in a small town in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, the state prosecutor’s office said.
The town of Chicomuselo, which is known as a path for immigrant and drug trafficking and has been the subject of cartel turf fights in recent months, was where the shootings took place, according to the office.
The town — and the neighboring castle of Morelia, where the deaths occurred — is in a sparsely populated area near Mexico’s borders with Guatemala.
At least some of the subjects of Tuesday’s murders appeared to be town inhabitants, despite there having been clashes between drug cartel as late as Monday.
As foe Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels compete for territory in the border region of Chiapas, crime has been reported there. As the cartels attempt to control migrant, drug, and weapons trafficking routes and violently attract locals, thousands of people have been forced to flee.
