The White House has previously criticized Israel for the slower delivery of humanitarian assistance, as well as for current right-wing activist attacks on aid trucks, but struggled on Wednesday to condemn Egypt for halting aid to Gaza.
Since Israel last year seized control of the Rafah Crossing, on the Egyptian-Gaza border, next year, Egypt has been preventing help trucks from entering Gaza. Egypt opposes Israel’s activity in Gaza to beat the next Hamas troops.
On Wednesday, Jake Turx, the White House editor for the Catholic Jewish magazine , Ami, asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean- Pierre to respond to Egypt’s behavior. Jean- Pierre appeared to dodge the question.
Without making any further comments on the necessity for Egypt to facilitate the movement of humanitarian assistance through the border crossing and into Gaza, Jean-Pierre said,” We’re going to continue to have those political discussions.”
When asked how Egypt could justify blocking humanitarian aid, Jean-Pierre responded that she would not get into great detail about political exchanges, but that she could only confirm that the United States had a commitment to support entering Gaza.
In response to Hamas ‘ launch of the fight against Israel on October 7, Egypt has fortified a border wall and closed the border to stop Palestinians from entering.
