Dame Judi Dench has a few brief words for people who need cause warnings:” If you’re that sympathetic, do n’t go to the theater”.
The 89- yr- ancient English actress was asked about her views on cause warnings in a new interview with Britain ‘s , Radio Times.
” Do they do that”? Dench replied. ” My God, it must be a very long cause warning before King Lear or Titus Andronicus”.
” I can see why they exist, and it is preparing people, I suppose, but if you’re that sensitive, do n’t go to the theatre, because you could be very shocked. Where is the wonder of being able to see and comprehend it in your own way?
She continued:” Why go to the theater if you’re going to be warned about issues that are in the play? Is n’t the whole business of going to the theatre about seeing something that you can be excited, surprised, or stimulated by? It’s like being told they’re all dying at the end of King Lear. I do n’t want to be told”.
Many stage companies have incorporated trigger warnings to avert audiences from possible upsetting material prior to performances. Companies have previously cautioned visitors about flashing lights and other level effects. However, the cautions then cover “offensive” material, such as female and minority portrayals in traditional plays.
As Breitbart News reported,  , Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London added a cause warning before a generation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar again in 2022, warning audiences of  , conflict, self- harm, and suicide, in addition to on- stage violence.
Judi Dench is the most recent celebrity to avoid cause warnings.
Ralph Fiennes urged venues to stop them, telling the BBC earlier this year that” I think the effect of theater should be that you’re shocked and you should be disturbed.” We never had trigger warnings for shows when I was younger, so I do n’t think you should be prepared for these things.
