California election officials are suing to push them to reduce unsuitable and dormant registrants from the country’s voter rolls, according to the watchdog group Judicial Watch.
The lawsuit, filed this month, urges the court to force California Secretary of State , Shirley Weber ( D) to abide by the voter list maintenance requirements included in the , National Voter Registration Act of 1993 ( NVRA ).
In its most recent nationwide clean-up, which dates from November 2020 to November 2022, leaders in 21 California regions removed five or fewer registrants from their voter rolls, according to the complaint. Of those 21 regions, 16 districts removed zero registrants.
Despite having nearly six million registered voters overall, the 21 regions only removed 11 registrants from their voting rolls.
For comparison, officers in San Diego County, California, from November 2020 to November 2022, removed more than 130, 000 registrants out of the 2.3 million registrants on their voting spins.
Additionally, Judicial Watch claims that 16 different California counties were unable to share how many registered voters were removed during the two-year period. These 16 districts, combined, represent almost 30 percent of the country’s population.
” Dirty election rolls can mean ugly votes. And California’s election floats continue to be a chaos”, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a speech. According to the complaint filed by Judiciary Watch,” Our new complaint shows there is more work to be done… California’s over a million obsolete brands have already been removed from the rolls.”
In fact, Judicial Watch reported in February of last year that Los Angeles County’s election officials were required to remove more than 1.2 million registered voters from the state’s voter rolls as a result of a settlement agreement.
Judicial Watch is hoping for a comparable clean-up in the regions where some registrants have been removed from voter rolls with its most recent lawsuit.
The situation is Judicial Watch v. Weber, No. 2: 24- resume- 3750 in the , U. S. District Court for the Central District of California.
