ZAGREB, Croatia ( AP ) – A car carrying migrants on Thursday skidded off road and hit a wall in southern Croatia, killing four people and seriously injuring five others, police said.
The driver of the car was speeding after evading a policeman station, according to Croatia’s Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic. He claimed that it was not immediately known whether the vehicle was killed in the collision or was a member of the injured.
According to Serbian press, the driver attempted to elude arrest for individuals smuggling, but the pilot was reportedly attempting to fend off the police. The five other passengers, including a kid, were injured and taken to the hospital.
Bozinovic said that “it was n’t a classic car chase” and that the driver hit the wall while trying to turn at a curve at “unadjusted” speed.
The vehicle had unusual license plates, Bozinovic said, without giving any more information. He added that police are searching for a different vehicle that was present but managed to flee.
Croatia is a member of the European Union. Before moving on to Slovenia or Italy, workers trying to reach Western Europe arrive in Croatia via Bosnia. They frequently use pirates to cross frontiers without getting them.
The accident happened around 7 a. m. near the town of Sinj, 18.6 kilometers ( 11.6 miles ) from the Bosnian border.
