( NewsNation ) — In Del Rio, Texas, migrants regularly try to evade law enforcement when they cross the southern border.
Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott is attempting to stop that by expanding Del Rio’s boundary wall and installing hundreds of cameras that the Texas Department of Public Safety has been monitoring so they can identify any so-called “blind locations.”
The governor’s contracted crews were full speed ahead with the roof growth, which was being implemented as part of Operation Lone Star, an initiative designed to reduce the number of illegal border entry points. Abbott deployed about 7, 600 camcorders along the borders through the procedure. Around 1, 000 of them are affixed to the wall now, some of which are functional, with another 2, 500 devices anticipated to get installed in the coming weeks.
Texas officials are not the only ones putting cameras on the border wall to deter unlawful immigration.
A mobile modular surveillance system was introduced last year as another impediment to illegal immigration across the border.
Mounted on a truck platform, the system combines fixed and mobile surveillance technologies, allowing users to observe activity across vast distances. The Border Security Operations Center, which has handled the feed from thousands of cameras along the border, has been operational for years.
In a statement to NewsNation, Mike Banks, the border czar, said,” Texas continues to use every tool and strategy to respond to the Biden-made crisis, including deploying cameras along the border wall to ensure a quick law enforcement response to stop illegal crossings.”
The project was funded by Texas, which has contributed more than$ 11 billion to state taxpayers for border security.
