After being denied entry to the major debate before the bloc goes to the polls next month, the two main right-wing organizations in the EU Parliament have filed a lawsuit against the European Broadcasting Union for social censorship.
The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR ), Identity and Democracy ( ID), and the populist movement have been informed that they will not be able to participate in the May 23rd Brussels debate due to a parliamentary dispute involving the” Spitzenkandidat” ( lead candidate ) system, an informal rule mandating that European Political Parties nominate their candidate for Commission President before the Parliamentary elections.
The two right-wing events believe that this undermines the authority of national governments, as represented by the European Council, in choosing their desired Commission presidential candidate. This is their right under the Maastricht Treaty, and the casual and non-binding Spitzenkandidat system intentionally empowers Brussels. The ID and ECR have both decided against selecting a cause candidate for Ursula von der Leyen’s best Commission position this year in light of this debate regarding political process.
They claimed that using the dispute as a pretext to exclude them from the debate by the publicly funded European Broadcasting Union ( EBU), a source of fame and celebrity in the Eurovision movement, demonstrated the censorious nature of the EU and the preferential treatment given to neo-liberal centrists and left-wing socialists, who have also used their authority to pass a  and cordon sanitaire ( sanitary cordon ) to avert populists and conservatives from key positions
However, the ongoing viability of the , Spitzenkandidat system is never a foregone conclusion, with it being seriously undermined following the 2019 EU Parliament elections by the EU Council backing Ursula von der Leyen despite the “lead candidate” to get the most seats being , European People’s Party leader Manfred Weber, who under the convention would therefore be the rightful , Spitzenkandidat. This has led some people to believe that the entire process is essentially unimportant because it is not legally binding by treaty.
Given that the ID faction was permitted to be represented by Dutch MEP Anders Vistisen and, according to the EBU, Valeriu GhileÈ›chi, the president of the European Christian Political Movement, despite neither being chosen as a so-called” Spitzenkandidat,” a Commission President’s decision was also questioned.
Vistisen , a response to the censorious act, wrote in response that” the state-funded media and the culturally radical elite hate us because they fear the millions of citizens we represent on the European continent.”

The decision to forbid the two main right-wing parties from debating comes as a result of a growing consensus that the euro-democratic parties will make a significant shift to the right in the Europan Parliament elections in June, supported by growing outrage over the cost of living crisis, mass migration, and the failures of the green agenda to insulate the bloc from external pressures on the energy market and for its negative effects on European farmers, whose protests have served as a rallying cry for the elections.
Ursula von der Leyen reportedly has begun courting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her conservative ECR in an effort to cling on to power and win a second term as Commission chief. This is the scale of the rightward turn among European citizens.
The most recent instance of open censorship from the EU comes after local leftist politicians in Brussels made a controversial attempt to overthrow the National Conservatism ( NatCon ) last month.
The district mayor openly bragged about shutting down the “far- right” conference, which would include mainstream politicians from former UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman, to Brexit leader Nigel Farage, and even the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán.
In stunning scenes, armed police surrounded the venue of the political conference, preventing politicians including members of the European Parliament, such as France’s Patricia Changnon, from entering the building, sparking criticism from centrist Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.
Changnon told Breitbart London that she thought the incident demonstrated how resilient elites in , Europe are to the people taking back control and defending their rights, despite a judge ultimately quashing the order to shut down the conference for violating the Belgian constitution’s freedom of speech and association protections.
