A police officer who shot dying an Algerian immigrant man who was in detention for a long time and who set fire to a temple on Friday night will be decorated by the French government.
A 29-year-old Moroccan immigrant who was carrying a 10′′ knife was fatally shot by police this morning. The man allegedly climbed onto a convent roof in Rouen, northern France, smashed a window, and was thrown in an explosive device.
According to public prosecutor Frédéric Teillet, officers called a man who was hacked from a hammer and a knife on top of a wall at the building after receiving a report that was made public about rising smoke out of it. Otherwise, the person insulted the soldiers and threw a hammer at them.

On May 17, 2024, French officers shot a man who was trying to set fire to a church in the French town of Rouen while European interior minister for interior and foreign affairs Gerald Darmanin speaks to the media outside the synagogue. One into the flames at the church and the other into the circumstances surrounding the death of the victim killed by the police, according to the prosecutor, have been opened two independent investigations. The man used his services weapons and threatened a police officer with a weapon, he added. ( Photo by Lou Benoist / AFP ) ( Photo by LOU BENOIST/AFP via Getty Images )
During the fight commanders were forced to drop back and, feeling threatened, one of the officers fired five pictures, four of which struck the Algerian. He received first aid, but he passed away at the picture.
The agent who used his weapon was kept in custody until the evidence supporting the shooting was established in accordance with customary treatment. Yet the French interior minister has made clear the president’s view on the matter, and says the officer who opened fire will be decorated by the state for his “extremely courageous, really expert” conduct.
The motive is being investigated, but the prosecutor is considering “arson due to religion… , intentional violence against persons holding public authority”.
Elie Korchia, President of French Jewish group  , Consistoire Central wrote of the attack, and thanked police for preventing a greater tragedy. He claimed that the police who were nearby neutralized an armed person who wanted to start fire to the Jewish synagogue in Rouen on this Shabbat eve. Thanks to our law enforcement, we prevented a recent anti-Semitic tragedy in our nation.
Rouen mayor , Nicolas Mayer- Rossignol said:” the attempted burning of the synagogue … it is not only the Israelite community that is affected. The entire town is shocked and stricken. Friday night, the mayor set up a rally in the town center.

After his request for a leave of absence from the country in 2022 was denied, the suspect, a 29-year-old Algerian migrant, was receiving a OQTF, an” Obligation de quitter la France,” or an order to leave the country. This meant he should n’t have been present at all to launch the attack. According to French police, the man was not listed on any extremism or terrorism watch lists, according to reports from national media outlets.
The synagogue sustained ,  ,” significant” fire damage, but fortunately there were no other injuries. Rabbi Shmuel Lubecki of Rouen, who claimed police had not yet allowed him to inspect the damage, but that it appeared that the holy books had not been damaged, was quoted by The Jerusalem Post.  , He said:” the Torah scrolls were not touched. It’s the most important thing there is in the synagogue”.
Since Hamas launched its deadly terror strike against Israel last year, soaring levels of antisemitism have been reported in many European states, including France. According to information released by the country’s interior ministry and community groups earlier this year, there were 280 percent more attacks registered year over year, with just three months after October 7th registering the same number of attacks as the previous three years combined.
