According to U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths, there are “very serious” security concerns about the aid pier in Gaza, that Hamas has stolen aid, and that when they do,” we have negotiated to get that aid back,” according to Griffiths on Thursday’s” PBS News Hour.” And, as far as I’m aware, in all circumstances, that has succeeded”.
” News Hour” Foreign Affairs and Defense Correspondent Nick Schifrin asked,” There are also security concerns about the pier. When the area came under fire, U. N. officers who had been putting together the jetty had to get support. How major, from your viewpoint, are the safety issues for the U. N., for the World Food Program, who’s going to be part of this”?
Thomas responded,” I think they’re really critical. Given that no help is being provided in the other areas, we may currently accept the risk level. So we’re hoping to be able to carry out our supply privately and are looking for the right people to assist us on the beach to provide aid to the World Food Program.
Eventually, Schifrin asked,” There have been times where Hamas has diverted or stolen the support. How do you prevent that from happening”?
Thomas responded,” Where that’s happened, we have negotiated to get that aid again. And, as far as I’m informed, in all circumstances, that has succeeded. We need to find all sales carefully delivered. Support is going in through the northeast, as you know, Nick, through Erez. I think 54 vehicles got in it yesterday”.
