German officials partially closed the Munich airport on Saturday after six climate activists allegedly climbed through a security fence and pressed themselves to accessibility airports, according to authorities and local press.
According to the German news agency dpa, Next Generation activists were protesting flying, the most damaging mode of transportation.
The six have been taken into custody by authorities.
According to an airport spokeswoman, inbound flights were directed to other airports. After a couple of hours, the airport’s two planes were reopened though some problems to flight schedules does occur, a statement on the airport´s standard website said.
Next Generation claimed on social media platform X that the German government was “downplaying” the damaging effects of flying on the environment rather than “finally acting honestly.”
European Interior Minister Nancy Faeser criticized the demonstrations and demanded that they stop. She wrote on X,” These criminal activities threaten air traffic and hurt climate safety because they only lead to lack of understanding and anger.”
Fraser also praised police’s efforts to restore order to the airport and demanded that aircraft security measures be investigated.
The behavior of the weather activists were harshly criticized by the general manager of the German Airports Association, Ralph Beisel.
” Trespassing on the safety of aircraft is not a minor offence. He told dp that over a hundred thousand individuals were prevented from a leisurely and timely stop to their Pentecost holiday.
Beisel even advocated for more severe sanctions for airport security officers.
In the middle of July, weather-related issues temporarily slowed planes at the Hamburg and Düsseldorf flights.
Next Generation, a group known for gluing themselves to streets to prevent prospects, which has irritated many Germans, announced in January that it would stop using the strategy and instead hold what it calls “disobedient assemblies”. Their actions have received a lot of negative feedback, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz referred to them as” completely nutty.”
