In opposition of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, students at a number of universities and colleges across the country have called on the institutions to shut down their holdings and hold graduation rites as a whole.
At Duke University, many pupils walked away as comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who has been vocal about his support for Israel, received an honorary diploma and gave the initiation conversation.
Activists halted graduation ceremonies on college and university campuses in early May, including the University of Utah and the University of Michigan . Some individuals protested at the smaller section graduation rites by holding signs and wearing zip-ties while Columbia University canceled its principal initiation service. One activist also tore her diploma apart.
This comes after anti-Israel demonstrations and camps sprung up on college and university schools in support of the first camp that was set up at Columbia University on April 17. Numerous students were suspended and thousands of protesters were detained the day after the initial anti-Israel camp at Columbia University was started.
After the first camp was taken down, a second one was built in its place and remained until officials from the New York Police Department raided Columbia University’s school at the end of April when protesters took command of a building on the school.
Anti-Israel protesters have called for different demands, including for universities to cut ties with Israeli universities, to end educational trips to Israel, to stop funding for Israel-related projects, and to end aid to Israel-based universities. Additionally, they want a ceasefire in the Israeli-Hamas conflict, and for the U.S. government to stop arming Israel.
