Six people were detained in Chicago and are facing fraud charges for staging deceptive city thefts to entice illegal immigrants into the country.
According to a federal prosecution, two Ohio people are accused of staging the robberies but that workers could make claims that they were victims of crimes that could be used to improve their chances of receiving prison, WFLD-TV reported.
Parth Nayi, 26, of Woodridge, and Kewon Young, 31, stand accused of being the ring leaders of the fraud robberies and, along with four people, have been charged with conspiracy to commit status fraud, punished by five years in federal prison. The various four indicted over the system include, Bhikhabhai Patel, 51, Nilesh Patel, 32, Ravinaben Patel, 23, and Rajnikumar Patel, 32.
The indictment alleges that Nayi and Young, staged the false robberies at gas stations, cafes, wine stores, and other areas in Chicago. The pair are even suspected of staging related activities in the Chicago suburbs of Lombard, Elmwood Park, St. Charles, Hickory Hills, River Grove, Lake Villa, and South Holland, as well as in other states such as Louisiana and Tennessee.
Lawyers say that after staging the false robberies, the “victims” may report standard police reports. Therefore, using those reports, they may apply for U-NAME position, which is granted only to crimes victims who have committed mental or physical abuse and have volunteered to assist U.S. police in their investigations.
When they began to realize that the robberies were highly organized affairs, including several stolen getaway cars, but never resulted in much more than$ 100 in lost property, Chicago police became suspicious of the robberies. Additionally, as is frequently seen in other Windy City robberies, credit cards and IDs were not taken or attempted carjacking of the “victims.”
Officers took a break when they apprehended the “robbers” in one affair and discovered them as young people with little criminal history, according to CWB Chicago. No one was expected to get hurt or lose any assets because the juveniles admitted they were hired to level a assault and that the “victims” were involved in the fraud. From there, CPD authorities began looking for those responsible for arranging the thefts for children.
Finally, officers discovered the “victims” were paying the managers thousands to get “robbed” so they could use the staged incidents to enhance their immigration status.
While the majority of the false robberies were unarmed and without any actual violence, one staged incident occurred last year when one of the false robbers hired to steal a immigrant accidentally shot the gun at a store employee in the abdomen. The worker was able to recover from the scar.
