Following President Joe Biden‘s announcement of a new round of student loan debt forgiveness worth nearly$ 8 billion, the White House faced heavy criticism on Wednesday.
This latest round of loan forgiveness, affecting more than 160, 000 loans, brings the total number of borrowers who have seen their debts forgiven by the leader to 4.75 million.
Republicans were quick to claim that Biden’s student loan efforts amount to an attempt to buy votes ahead of the 2024 election, with House Speaker Mike Johnson ( R- LA ) calling the debt forgiveness” shameful” earlier on Wednesday.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre attempted to turn Johnson’s criticism on its head during Wednesday’s press lecture, which included some issues on the subject.
Democrats continue to interfere with our efforts to give Americans who deserve a much breathing space, she told reporters. This is a senator who has made it very clear that he is creating an environment that leaves no one behind.
Despite this, Jean-Pierre was also subjected to constant press by reporters regarding how college dropouts may view the initiative and the rising cost to taxpayers.
” I hear your problem, but this is — if you look at what the president has done more thoroughly over the past 3 1/2 decades, he has tried to build an economy for all. This is one piece of this financial policy”, she countered.
During one of her reactions, a writer objected to Jean- Pierre’s speech that student borrowers are “literally being crushed”, prompting the media minister to alter her reply.
” Financially, OK”? she retorted. ” Crushed materially, and therefore they’re trying to get their life back on track”.

” What we believe is student loan withdrawal gives an option for Americans to launch a living, to buy a home, or to launch a home”, Jean- Pierre concluded. That strengthens the business and is crucial to it. And it gives, again, a little bit of breathing room so that they can really take actions and do things that, that they’ve yearned to do”.
