During a Thursday hearing involving oversight of the , Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ( ATF), Rep. Matt Gaetz ( R- FL ) roasted ATF Director Steven Dettelbach for referencing Sen. John Cornyn ( R- TX ) as a trustworthy Second Amendment source.
In a line of questioning, Gaetz and Dettelbach questioned the general background check concept for the ATF, and inquired about the level a law-abiding private citizen must pass in order to be deemed “engaged in the business” of selling weapon.
Gaetz posed the question,” How several firearms does someone have to offer to be’engaged in the business’ of dealing handguns?”
Dettelbach did not answer the query. Instead, he said,” That matter is being litigated in several courts, so, sticking to what’s already in the public record, the rule itself is 16 pages, skipping lines, …]combined ] with over 400 pages of explanation”.
He went on to say,” We received many comments ]on the rule]. One of the responses that we received was from, I think, Sen. Cornyn, who expressed the view that there was no numeric level”.
Gaetz then interjected, saying,” In the House Judiciary Committee, we probably wo n’t look to Sen. Cornyn as the oracle of all things gun rights”.
Once more, the ATF is attempting to turn people into criminals out of law-abiding Americans.
In an effort to prevent Americans from transferring firearms lawfully, the new ATF rule targets private sales.
It’s therefore over- large, Director Dettelbach himself the n’t define it!

Some Senate Republicans made an effort to enact a general background check law on May 16, 2024, according to Breitbart News. According to the content, Cornyn was one of 45 GOP senators who attempted to veto the law.
Unfortunately, the Biden Administration attempted to defend the 2022 gun control bill by referencing the general background check rule. Bureaucrats in President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice ( DOJ) claim that the 2022 gun control, i. e., the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, opened the door to the enactment of universal background checks.
