Community members need to be informed about “affinity cover.”
University of Washington’s plan to set aside a certain property hall ground only for black students is no” segregation”, according to an executive.
Beginning this fall, Black students on the Seattle school can choose to sit only with people of their race, according to The Seattle Medium.
” Dorm areas on the 8th ground of Lander Hall on the UW ‘ s Seattle school may be set apart by Fall 2024 for Black kids”, the news blog reported.
But some weight to the “black affection cover” is expected, according to Magdalena Fonseca. She leads the school’s Tribal Cultural Center.
According to Fonseca,” You’re going to get community users from outside the school who have the perception that creating a particular affection cover group might be seen as segregation,” according to the Seattle Medium. ” A lot of people are supportive, but that does n’t mean everyone is”.
She said it will become “very difficult” to inform people about the new cover, but the engagement is” anything to accept”.
There are n’t many places where Black students can feel safe and like they can find people who look like them or have similar cultural backgrounds, according to Fonseca. ” It was really important to create a place in the private rooms.”
The media outlet even reported:
Fonseca is certain that making Black affection cover at UW will help create an inclusive culture for Black students. As more and more students begin to inform others about the campus ‘ existence, more individuals will choose UW as a school option.
Students were told in a presentation about the new cover that they might be “part of story.”
Although the enclosure was described in the lecture as “open to all approaching and returning students,” that is not how the school addressed it to the media.
” It was a natural idea to invite the]Office of Minority &, Diversity ] staff to help inform what college students are going through, specifically Black students on campus”, Fonseca, the cultural center director said.
A student phrase that is highlighted on the information site also states,” I hope that black kids get a sense of group and help early on, and easily build and maintain important relationships with students who also share similar names and experience.
Students are required to “actively maintain a living environment that is supportive of Black culture and the development of community and comradery,” according to the housing office presentation.
Residents must also promise to further their “knowledge…of racism, discrimination, and systems of oppression”.
According to The College Fix,” Black Affinity Housing” is also present at Western Washington University.
