NEW DELHI: Weeks after the Arab League demanded that the UN peacekeepers be stationed in Gaza and the West Bank, the division head responded, saying that the world cannot reasonably expect the UN to end war because of its shortcomings.
Calling the objective in Israeli occupied Arab territories “very, really, really hypothetical”, under secretary- standard for peace operations Jean- Pierre Lacroix told AFP that “peacekeeping has its limits”, and “imposing peace” is no part of the UN’s mandate.
” Imposing peace is… a synonym for waging war. Lacroix said that “many members of the Security Council are against that.”
Lacroix cited the limitations of the Blue Helmets as being insufficient to stop the war, including a cease-fire, deal from opposing parties to take UN forces, and approval from a deeply divided UN Security Council.
France and Russia, people of the UN Security Council, are also exploring a position for UN peacekeepers in Gaza when Israel’s military effort to eradicate the Hamas militant group, AFP reported.
The recent UN peacekeeping force known as UNTSO, which was established in 1948 and still has a tiniest, unarmed regiment stationed in Lebanon, is being sent through the program.
