
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office made an arrest Wednesday in a trip killing in Sarasota that left past Florida football player Brian Battie on a ventilator and killed his older sibling.
The Sheriff’s Office said in a media transfer that Darryl Bernard Brookins, 28, has been identified as the believe in the incident that occurred in the Tallywood Centre Plaza driving lot in the 3400 wall of 17th Street at approximately 3:30 a. m. Saturday.
Brookins has been charged with murder, attempted murder and as a murderer in possession of a rifle. He has four previous felony convictions, according to a probable-cause oath released by the Sheriff’s Office.
Brian Battie, now a running again at Auburn, and three people ranging in age from 36 to 46 were hospitalized. Brian Battie, 22, sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, according to the petition. Tommie Battie, 24, sustained a single bullet wound to the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Video images obtained from the surrounding companies showed a Black female suspect, later identified as Brookins, seen leaning against a glass of the courtyard when the Battie sons approach him.
At that point, Brookins drew a rifle and began shooting at the boys, the affidavit says. The Battie boys both returned gunshots, at which point Brian was seen falling to the ground, followed by his nephew.
Brookins fled on foot, traveling west on 17th Street. In the time following the shooting, police received multiple Crimestoppers ideas indicating Brookins shot the Battie boys. Brookins left his car, a 1998 natural Chevrolet SUV, at the murder field upon fleeing on foot.
Sarasota City Commissioner Kyle Battie, a cousin of Brian and Tommie , told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune on Tuesday that the shooting was a “senseless work of firearm violence. ”
“My prayers are with all of the patients and their loved ones, including my relatives who lost their son, Tommie, and for my aunt, Brian, and his companion who are both fighting for their lives. We had come together to do more to protect our children from these dreadful begins. ”
Brian Battie played at USF for three decades, rushing for 1,186 feet in the 2022 season.
