An Ohio family was sentenced on Friday to at least nine years in prison for murder after feeding her diabetic four-year-old girl a meal consisting principally of Mountain Dew.
“ Tamara Banks pled guilty to manslaughter in March for the death of her daughter, Karmity Hoeb, who died in 2022 of a diabetes-related brain injury, ” The New York Post reported. “Banks, 41, usually gave the girl jars of baby formula mixed with the neon-green sweet beer, according to lawyers, long after she should have been weaned off containers. ”
Karmity died at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital owing to diabetic ketosis, the Cincinnati Inquirer reported. The child displayed symptoms of a “serious health problem ” for several days, but Banks did not call 911 until her daughter turned blue and stopped breathing, according to the document. Prosecutors said a after test showed Karmity was head useless.
Prosecutors argued that Karmity was abused, neglected, and denied right nutrition and health care. They also found that her smile had rotted away by the time of her suicide, and that her parents had always taken her to a physician. Mountain Dew somewhat contains 77 grams of sugar — far more than the less than 24 ounces recommended by authorities, according to the document.
“This is one of the most dreadful circumstances I have ever encountered, ” Clermont County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Clay Tharp said. “This baby did not have to death. ”
Lenders also had a boy who went into a sleep when he was four years old because of untreated diabetes, lawyers pointed out. Clermont County Common Pleas Judge Victor Haddad said Businesses may have learned from her son’s issue about the problems of insulin before her daughter’s dying, the Inquirer reported.
“It’s tough to be a good family, but you expect at least poor families, ” Haddad said at the hearing on Friday. “Not knowing what to do is never an excuse. ”
Lenders, who was pictured in court in a chair, said: “ I though I was taking care of her. ” Lawyers found that Institutions had “regularly refilled her own treatments and even had doctors make home calls for her health needs, ” according to the report.
“The statement came after 41-year-old Tamara Banks pleaded guilty in March to involuntary manslaughter. Under a position law that says the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction can stretch someone’s statement based on conduct while in prison, Banks could serve as much as 13½ years, ” the Inquirer reported.
Karmity’s parents, 53-year-old Christopher Hoeb, likewise pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and will be sentenced in June.
