The Apprentice left the Cannes Film Festival empty-handed, with no news of a U. S. supply bargain following former President Donald Trump’s risk of a complaint and cease-and-desist need against the directors.
In addition, the film failed to win any prizes at Saturday’s final festival, despite some drama pundits predicting that professional Sebastian Stan may be rewarded for his description of Trump.
While a customer could occur in the days ahead, the street to U. S. supply looks questionable as streamers and specialty dramatic labels would have to consider the possibility of a untidy and protracted legal battle. Box-office hopes also appear dull, as people have largely shunned social and another big-issue movies in recent years.
The Apprentice garnered an enormous quantity media focus at this year’s Cannes, especially for its image depicting Trump raping his second wife, Ivana. The video also shows Trump undergoing plastic surgery and botox.
Ivana Trump herself has denied that her then-husband always raped her.
Following the Cannes launch, Trump’s plan threatened to sue the artists.
“We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers, ” the Trump campaign’s chief spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement. “This bullshit is real literature which sensationalizes lays that have been much questioned. ”
He also called the video “malicious libel. ”
Lawyers for Trump even sent a cease-and-desist email to The Apprentice director Ali Abassi and screenwriter Gabriel Sherman ( pictured: far left ), warning them against pursuing a distribution deal.
“It is a mix of lies that repeatedly defames President Trump and constitutes direct foreign interference in America’s elections, ” the notice stated. “If you do not immediately cease and desist all submission and promotion of this malicious comedy, we will be forced to do all suitable legal solutions. ”
The Apprentice was independently financed and produced outside the Hollywood theater structure — mainly through international organizations as well as some local investors.
