Japan: A Chinese capital has registered a similar- sex couple as partners under the same address, an unexpected step hailed by the men as “groundbreaking” in a country without marriage equality.
In Japan, everyone registers their target with local officials, and Keita Matsuura, 38, told AFP he used to be listed separately from his spouse Yutaro Fujiyama, despite living together.
When the two moved to Omura, in the southeastern area of Nagasaki, they informed area officials that they wanted to register up, just like a married couple may.
Originally, the city offered to record Fujiyama as Matsuura’s sibling, but after conversations, they agreed this fortnight to enroll him like a spouse, Matsuura said Tuesday.
Japan is the only G7 country that does not accept exact- sex unions, and regional media said the move was extraordinary.
Matsuura said he was” amazed and extremely happy” despite the fact that the membership is not the same as a legal marriage.
” I could n’t stop dancing and smiling”, he said.
” I think it’s a groundbreaking choice,” he said, going one step further than the non-legal-binding relationship system, in which municipalities problem certificates to gay people.
” I hope this will lead to more sensible advantages for same-sex people and help legalize same-sex unions,” said the author.
Taiwan is the only Asian nation with justice in marriage, and Thailand is one step closer to legalizing same-sex organizations this time.
In Japan, mind polls show growing assistance for LGBTQ- friendly regulations, particularly among younger individuals.
However, the ruling liberal party has shown resistance in advancing measures.
Dozens of big municipalities, including Tokyo, today offer partnership certificates that allow similar- sex couples to get treated as married in specific areas such as housing, medicine and welfare.
The LGBTQ and heterosexual employees also receive the same family benefits as do many large Japanese companies.
However, a number of recent court decisions have resulted in conflicting rulings regarding the constitutionality of same-sex marriage in Japan.
Marriage is a requirement of” the mutual consent of both sexes,” according to Japan’s 1947 constitution, but it also states that all people “are equal under the law.”
