On Tuesday, Israeli Defense Forces ( IDF) tanks arrived in the center of the town of Rafah. Several media sources claim that Israel intended to advance toward the edge rather than retreat.
The , Wall Street Journal reported:
Witnesses claim that Israeli tanks moved further into Rafah on Tuesday as the Israeli military announced that its functions there were getting worse internationally.
The tank passed near the Al- Awda mosque, a northern Rafah location, Palestinians in the town told The Wall Street Journal. Israel’s Army Radio reported that the military had added a brigade to the five operating in the city and that soldiers were engaged in close-quarters combat with Hamas, but the Israeli military did n’t comment on the specifics of its push into Rafah.
Israel pioneered the strategy of piercing the spirit of an army area and retreating during Operation Defensive Shield in the West Bank in 2002, which afterwards became a model for urban counter-terror war. The goal is to confound army soldiers by attacking them from the back.
Israel also ( controversially ) uses armored bulldozers in its attacks on terrorists in urban centers, carving out corridors for troops and vehicles to avoid booby- trapped pathways.
Another benefit of starting the conflict from Rafah’s facility is that more people can flee as a result. Nearly one million Palestinians are reportedly escaping to nearby cities and shelters.
Lastly, with international pressure against the Rafah operation building, Israel may also be looking to speed up its tactics, going directly to the heart of the city more than fighting small, created- out skirmishes on the outskirts.
