A 92-year-old former from Hawaii has finally succeeded in achieving his goal of graduating high school after quitting to support his family and his land.
Stanley Oshima, who was wearing a red cap and gown at the commencement service for Kauai High School on May 24 in Lihue, was one of the teen alumni, Hawaii News Now reported.  ,
Oshima was born in 1932 and raised in Puhi, but because his family needed extra money, he did not have the opportunity to complete his research.  ,
Principal Marlene Leary addressed Oshima to the audience as she explained to him that” a tough decision was made as a young man to leave high school to support his family by working for Grove Farm as a rough carpenter.”
” This demonstrated an amazing sense of duty,” he said. Two years later, he joined the army to support his family”, she explained.
Oshima won a Croix de Guerre award with a gold star from France while he was on the front ranges of the Korean War.  ,
When he returned from the war, he transferred his military benefits to his nephew so he could enroll in college, another unselfish act to help his family.  ,
” Mr. Oshima’s living tale is one of unwavering commitment to his community, to the Kauai area, and beyond. He embodies the principles of tenacity and generosity, serving as an motivation to us all”, Leary said.
In response to that, Oshima received an honorary diploma to remember his life spent serving people in front of 30 community members.  ,
