DUBICZE CERKIEWNE, Poland ( AP ) – Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Wednesday that its forces would further fortify the border with Belarus and can use” all available means” to defend the NATO nation’s frontier, after a soldier was seriously wounded with a knife by a migrant.
Tusk said that a buffer zone some 200 meters ( 660 feet ) wide would be set up along the border, which is also the European Union’s eastern frontier, in addition to a 190- kilometer ( 118- mile ) long metal barrier already in place to prevent an influx of migrants crossing from Belarus. According to Poland, Belarus and Russia are coordinating the force of illegal immigration.
Tusk stated that the government may decide on the buffer zone the following year.
Following a knife attack on a man early on Tuesday morning near the village of Dubicze Cerkiewne, Tusk, along with the security and interior officials, visited soldiers, border soldiers, and police forces securing the frontier.
According to officials, the man is still in a severe problem in the hospital.

A migrant allegedly stabbed the soldier in the ribs and reached across the bars of the more than 5 meters ( 16 feet ) high metal wall separating Poland from Belarus. According to authorities, the intruder was on the Belarus side of the barrier, so police were unable to detain him.
” There is no room for negotiation. Poland’s border may become protected”, Tusk said. ” Polish army, border guards, soldiers have become the target of anger and you have every correct, not to say an duties, to use every means available to you … when you are defending not only the border but even your own existence”, Tusk said.
Extra police and military personnel will be dispatched to the place, according to Tusk and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The pro-EU government claims that Russia and Belarus are pushing the force and aggression of illegal immigration to increase as Moscow declares war on Ukraine. According to Poland’s government, immigrant groups presently primarily consist of young men, as opposed to earlier individuals with women and children. This year, more than 13, 000 attempts at illegal crossings have been registered, which is a rise from the same time last year.
