After last year’s sequel-boothflopflop, the Exorcist franchise will be moving in a strong, fresh direction. Both critics and viewers were disappointed.
Universal hoped to revive the Exorcist franchise with a reboot from David Gordon Green, the director of Halloween ( 2018 ), after spending$ 400 million to acquire the rights. However, the movie failed to win any positive reviews and came in the lowest of the box office with only$ 137 million on a$ 30 million resources.
As of this writing, the video has a dreadful 4.8 standing on IMDB , and has frequently been regarded as the worst in the company, rivaled simply by 1977’s Exorcist II: The Sinner. Fans attributed the film’s massive failure to its departure from its original material, which featured a multi-faith exorcism ( something William Peter Blatty would never have approved ) and gave the titular character Chris MacNeil ( Ellen Burstyn ) a glorified cameo. One scene, in which Bursty n’s MacNeil lamented that she could n’t witness her daughter’s exorcism because of the” Catholic Patriarchy,” particularly irritated online users.

Until now, with the exception of producer Mike Flanagan ( Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep), Universal appears to have learned its lesson and will instead resurrect the company.
:Horror maestro Mike Flanagan will write, direct and produce what Blumhouse is describing as a’ radical new take’ on the franchise, one that will be set in the , Exorcist , universe but will not be a sequel to , Believer, “announced The Hollywood Reporter ( THR ) on Wednesday.
” Flanagan ‘s , Exorcist , hiring is a notable change in direction that comes nearly three years after Universal announced a$ 400 million  , megadeal , that would allow it to make a trilogy of , Exorcist , films to be helmed by David Gordon Green, the filmmaker behind Universal and Blumhouse’s hit , Halloween , movies. Those ideas were put on the shelf after Green ‘s , Believer , earned negative reviews and brought in$ 137 million at the box office, “it added.

” Mike’s speech and vision are indispensable for dread followers, and we are excited to welcome him up to Blumhouse. I was immediately taken aback by Mike’s innovative take on The Tale and look forward to seeing how people will react, according to Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse.
