A Mexican candidate for mayor of Guerrero was about to take the stage at a campaign occasion when a gunman opened fire on him. At least 36 candidates were killed and over 300 political attacks were committed in Mexico during one of its bloodiest election cycles in less than a month.
The shooting occurred in the southern condition of Guerrero on Wednesday evening in the city of Coyuca de Benitez. In order to wrap up his battle activities, Jose Alfredo Cabrera Barrientos, the mayor, was getting ready for the election on Sunday. He ran against the ruling party of Mexico, MORENA, in a primary election.
A gunman snuck up behind Cabrera Barrientos as he prepared to take the step, according to a mobile phone video that was captured the time. The gunman fired two photographs, knocking down the lawmaker. The shooter then allegedly stood over him and apparently lobbed up to 15 shots before fleeing.

The shooter died shortly after allegedly engaging in a fight with government, according to a declaration from the Guerrero Attorney General’s Office. A minute video, which is being watched by lots of Mexican National Guardsmen, shows the body of the shooter on the ground.

Mexico’s presidential election is scheduled for June 2, along with several other state and local elections, as the shooting occurs. In response to allegations of widespread fraud, ties to organized crime, and political persecution at the hands of the ruling party in Mexico, MORENA is expected to encounter a difficult issue on that day. Due to the widespread problem and crime that plague the democratic period, the political culture has been very content.
Since the start of the social period in June 2023, the Laboratorio Electoral has documented 320 social problems and 93 political deaths. Laboratorio Electoral has included 36 candidates or precandidates among the 93 social murder victims.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the president of Mexico, claimed this week that previous governments had collaborated with organized crime, and that the political murder was the result of this.
