The host of” Real Time” on Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s” Real Time” criticized the accusations against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito over the” Appeal to Heaven” flag by claiming that no one owned the flag and that” George Washington flew this flag,” and that” we did n’t get the full story about it from the initial reporting.” They currently own George Washington.”
Maher began by saying,” I feel like the Supreme Court used to have such esteem, and now they’re just a politician in a robe. And we see this with Alito, this hubbub about the flag”.
After that, Maher brought up the upside-down American flag and made the claim that there is a double standard for “patriotic immunity,” where Republicans can get away with things that Democrats ca n’t, but that’s a different issue from the recusal one.
After turning to the” Appeal to Heaven” symbol, Maher said,” I find out now, because you never get the whole story from the first day or from just one source, this emblem flies a lot of areas. They’re saying Alito flew it as…a dog whistle to the stop the steal people, to MAGA nation, that this is their flag now, it means that we do n’t believe the election was fair, but it was flying over the City Hall in San Francisco for 60 years”.
He continued,” And now, because of this cover, Mayor London Breed that has ordered the symbol to be removed. … I’ve seen people who believe that MAGA is now in some way owning the British flag, yes, the British emblem. Nothing owns these colors, nobody owns loyalty. I think it’s a really bad thing for San Francisco to take this down and say, ok, that’s you today. No, it’s no. Why? This symbol was flown by George Washington. They currently own George Washington.”
