Apparently, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA ) has reportedly become a “quiet mentor” to John Boehner, the conservative nemesis turned lobbyist who was fired from the speakership in 2015 for pushing Obama administration priorities.
Boehner , —” an establishment Republican who was speech a decade ago sequentially, but an epoch back in the GOP’s extreme evolution — has become a shocking tutor” to Johnson, Axios reported Monday.

Boehner hosted a charity for Johnson’s PAC on May 30 in his native Ohio, according to the document. In reporting on the future charity,  , Punchbowl News , noted,  ,” If you’ve listened to Speaker Mike Johnson just, there is some John Boehner control poking through”.
That effect, and the similarities between the two people’s preferred controlling tone, is increasingly clear.
In October 2015, Boehner gave himself to a traditional rebellion as a result of his passing of Democratic objectives into a paying bill  and numerous prior violations of the Hastert Rule.  , About two dozen Democratic members, led by subsequently- Rep. Mark Meadows ( R- NC),  , indicated , they had voting against Boehner in a “vacate the seat” resolution, which led to Boehner resigning.
A majority of the lot must only be used to pass legislation, according to the casual law known as the Hastert Rule.

In just seven months, Johnson has passed legislation that violates the Hastert Rule twice, including passing$ 1.2 trillion in Ukraine aid in March and$ 1.2 trillion in Ukraine aid in April. Johnson vehemently opposed the latter for months before flip-flipping after intense lobbying from the Biden administration.
In consequence, Johnson was forced to veto a ballot in May. But, unlike with Boehner, Democrats rushed to Johnson’s help. To maintain Johnson as Speaker, a staggering 163 Democrats voted.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY ) boasted of securing control of the House from Republicans under Johnson’s control because his agenda has been so indistinguishable from Democrats ‘.
Jeffries said on 60 Days,” We properly have been governing as if we were in the lot because we continue to give us the majority of the votes needed to get things done.” ” Those are just the information”.
Boehner revealed to Politico the depths of his under- the- sensor connection with Johnson , — with his trademark negativity toward liberals.
Boehner, a notorious imbiber who narrated his autobiographical anti- conservative gripe- fest with copious amounts of red wine, told Axios,” For a guy who does n’t drink, smoke, or cuss ,]Johnson is a] really an affable guy”.
” He’s got to do this Kabuki dance every day to keep some of his more — I do n’t even want to call them conservatives”, Boehner said:
I do n’t know , what , you — I think that’s the wrong word for them. He must perform this routine to try to appease his caucus. But ultimately, he is aware of what needs to be done and finds a way to accomplish it.
Boehner revealed how Johnson, in Axios’s words,” shifted his position on the most vital foreign policy legislation in years” to “defy , a majority of his party”.
WATCH , — , Lauren Boebert:” It Makes No Difference” If Mike Johnson or Hakeem Jeffries Is Speaker:
Johnson “may not have been thrilled with the Ukraine stuff early on,” he said.  , But once you become speaker, one, you learn a few more things, and two, the gravity of the issues you’re dealing with change as well.
” All of a sudden, you have not just a responsibility to your district or to yourself. You’ve got a team of members, and you’ve got what’s good in the long- term interest of the country involved as well. And I think he rose to the occasion.”
Boehner currently serves as a lobbyist for Squire Patton Boggs, one of the largest lobbying firms in the world.  , In 2018, he joined the board of Acreage Holding to promote the use of marijuana, a year later becoming chair of the National Cannabis Roundtable, a marijuana lobbying organization.
Boehner tweeted a Washington-speak that echoes Johnson’s argument that funding Ukraine and the need for warrants to spy on Americans have changed. A provision in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that prohibits warrantless surveillance, an issue for which Johnson had battled for years as a member of the Judiciary Committee, was defeated earlier this year after Johnson himself provided the vote to kill the provision.
Johnson’s biggest battle remaining in 2024 is advancing 2025 fiscal year spending bills before the end of September deadline. Johnson claims that he is considering passing a continuing resolution to extend the deadline until the Congress’s lame duck session, which is another boon for conservatives.
By avoiding liability for himself and other members until a second round of elections in two years, Johnson would ensure that the House considers spending legislation after the November elections but before the new Congress is sworn in.
Conservatives are unlikely to be pleased with the outcome if the past is prologue and Boehner is in Johnson’s ear, and more gloating from Hakeem Jeffries is to be anticipated.
