Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, announced on Sunday that he would dissolve the National Assembly and schedule a quick parliamentary session following the party’s crushing defeat in the European Parliament elections.

The decision comes as European mind poll results for the first time on Sunday showed the far-right National Rally party to be well ahead in the European Union’s legislative election, defeating Macron’s pro-European centrists, according to European opinion poll companies.
