The organization that oversees them is being questioned by the second federal government inspector general’s dismissal in the next two decades.
In the midst of a arduous research into her business, Social Security Administration Inspector General Gail Ennis resigned on May 31.
Investigators standard are in charge of supervising various government agencies, and they are also run by a group of other auditors known as the Integrity Committee of the Inspector General’s Guidance on Integrity and Performance.
CIGIE is extremely finding itself accused of abuse and democratization.
” The more we learn about the Integrity Committee, the more problems I have about the way it operates”, Rep. Andy Biggs ( R- Phoenix ) said. They appear to pick the claims they will thoroughly research. They have used a weapon to sabotage Inspectors General’s investigation because they do n’t align with the committee’s objectives and desires.
He views Ennis as the most recent illustration of a growing issue.
Gail Ennis is undoubtedly not the first Inspector General to become impacted by their heavy duty this month, according to Biggs.
President Joe Biden fired long-time Railroad Retirement Board IG Martin Dickman in March after almost 30 years, who had been the subject of a CIGIE investigation since January 2023.
CIGIE said Dickman created a hostile work environment, but his firing led to a letter from Sen. Chuck Grassley ( R- IA ) seeking more information, and to a scathing statement from Dickman’s lawyer, Justin Weddle.
Weddle said CIGIE’s Integrity Committee “lacks responsibilities, justice, and transparency”, and accused it of” tossing around conclusory and abstract phrases such as ‘ dangerous work culture’ — as if they had been scrutinized and found believable in a process conducted according to proper techniques. They were never”.
Two months later, Ennis resigned amid another long CIGIE research. According to the Washington Post, the CIGIE’s draft report claimed that she had obstructed its research and that she had cited declining morale and reports that she had levied increased fines against people accused of disability fraud.
But, Ennis, a Trump nominee who was confirmed for the location in 2019, wrote a clearly worded response to the report one time before announcing her departure.
According to her,” This analysis and reporting constitute retribution for disclosing what I and my business realistically believed to be legal violations committed by CIGIE and Justice Department IG] Michael Horowitz.” Every action I and my business have taken to express our problems in great trust has been met with more retaliation. When was good intended, the process has exhausted and irritated me.
The Integrity Committee‘s lead, Amtrak Inspector General Kevin Winters, was the subject of the email.
Under the influence of IG Horowitz and his chosen CIGIE authority, who have abused CIGIE investigating power to stifle the organization’s power and influence, the IG area has become political, she wrote. ” I spoke up against CIGIE overreach, opposing one of these abusive policies IG Horowitz implemented … Unfortunately, I was appointed by a Republican president, and I cannot match the political patronage wielded by IG Horowitz and CIGIE leadership”.
Summers and Horowitz have been contacted for reply by The Washington Examiner.
Ennis reportedly created a hostile work environment, identical to those brought against Dickman, as alleged in the grievances against him.
A fourth investigator standard, Joseph Cuffari of the Department of Homeland Security, has been the subject of a CIGIE analysis for four years.
The New Civil Liberties Alliance , filed suit , against CIGIE last year on Cuffari’s representative, saying he “has been eternally harassed and had his company’s assets drained by a series of false questions”.
That scenario was later , dismissed , on premises that the research itself did not amount to unconstitutional abuse, but NCLA attorney John Vecchione maintains that the CIGIE approach is riddled with problems.
” Although the authorities say you can be investigated permanently, what we say is that the process is the punishment”, Vecchione said. ” From what I’ve seen, it’s just an infinite set of’ are you still beating your partner ‘ form questions”.
The executive branch of the federal government is an independent body called the CIGIE, and its people are not presidents.
CIGIE has been questioned about failing to research different issues, despite the length of the studies into Cuffari, Ennis, and Dickman.
In a letter to Winters in late May, Biggs and eight different Republican members of Congress asked him why his council had not investigated allegations made against DHS IG people, which were presented by Cuffari.
They wrote that” this failure raises serious questions about the militarization of the Integrity Committee itself and is a violation of the committee’s legal duty to ensure transparency among the neighborhood of Inspectors General.”  ,

Winters claimed in a letter from last June that he was limited in his answer as a result of the ongoing characteristics of a connected investigation.
” The fact that]the case ] remains under investigation limits the degree it can be discussed”, he wrote. The Circuit is unable to provide meaningful updates while this complicated investigation is ongoing.
