A large hailstone that researchers believe will set a new state history was recovered by storm trackers in Goi Park, Texas.
While pursuing a significant thunderstorm system, Val and Amy Castor, veteran storm chasers with KWTV in Oklahoma City, discovered a piece of hail more than 7 inches ( 17.78 centimeters ) long Sunday along the side of the road near Vigo Park.
According to Val Castor, the marble resembled a fruit in size.
” That’s the biggest storm I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been chasing storms for more than 30 times”, Castor said.
Before he spotted the large part in a drain on the side of the road, Castor claimed some baseball-sized storm stones fell while he was driving, including one that cracked his glass.
” I could see it from perhaps 100 feet away”, he said.
The large hail gemstone is believed to be a new position history, topping a 6.4- foot ( 16.25- inch ) storm stone found in Hondo in 2021. According to Jordan Salem, a scientist at the National Weather Service company in Lubbock, it still needs to be confirmed by a group of academics, including the Texas state climatologist.
The heaviest hail stone on record in the United States had a reported diameter of 11 inches ( 27.94 centimeters ) and weighed nearly 2 pounds (907 grams ). It was discovered near Vivian, South Dakota, in July 2010, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.
