A U.S. Navy submarine has arrived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in a show of force as a ship of Russian vessels gather for upcoming military activities in the Caribbean.
U. S. Southern Command said the USS Helena, a nuclear- controlled fast attack submarine, pulled into the waters near the U. S. base in Cuba on Thursday, only a day after a Soviet frigate, a atomic- driven submarine, an oil tanker and a rescue tug crossed into Havana Bay after drills in the Atlantic Ocean.
The halt is portion of a “routine switch visit” as the underwater moves through Southern Command’s area, it said in a social media post.
The Russian drills, which Pentagon officials claim do n’t pose a threat to the United States, are being tracked and monitored by other U.S. ships.
” This is not a wonder. When asked about the Russian training, Pentagon representative Sabrina Singh said on Wednesday that she had seen them conduct these kinds of port calling before. ” We of course take it seriously, but these activities do n’t pose a threat to the United States”.
The exercises, but, come less than two weeks after President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to employ U. S. provided weapons to strike in Russia to protect Kharkiv, Ukraine’s next- largest city. Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, then suggested that his country could take “asymmetrical steps” elsewhere in the world.
Singh claimed it would n’t surprise to see more Russian military exercises abroad. The Russian ships are expected to stay there for the duration of the summer and possibly stop in Venezuela as a result of the drills, which are taking place in international waters.
Russia has long supported Venezuela and Cuba, and its warships and aircraft have frequently flocked to the Caribbean.
Since 2008, a group of Russian ships have occasionally docked in Havana, which state media described as the first time in almost 20 years. A day before U.S. and Cuban officials began discussions regarding the resumption of diplomatic relations, a reconnaissance and communication ship unannouncedly arrived in Havana in 2015.
