A campaign group supporting Huang Xueqin, a Foreign# MeToo activist, received a five-year prison sentence on Friday, according to a battle group, which is calling for her release and the ruling. Labour advocate Wang Jianbing, who was tried alongside Huang, got a three- time and six- month statement.
Huang, an impartial columnist and 35 years old, intends to appeal the decision, her followers confirmed.
“( The sentence ) was longer than we expected”, commented a spokesperson from the campaign group Free Huang Xueqin and Wang Jianbing.
” Their efforts and dedication to labour, women’s rights, and the broader civil society wo n’t be negated by this unjust trial, nor will society forget their contributions. On the contrary, as tyranny persists and unfairness grows, more activists like them may continue to rise”, stated the battle group, mostly composed of international activists, before the verdict was announced.
Who is Huang Xueqin?
In September 2021, Wang and Huang were detained together with Wang. She is a well-known female activist and journalist renowned for her coverage of China’s# MeToo activity and the Hong Kong pro-democracy demonstrations. Only one day prior to Huang’s scheduled departure for the UK to study at the University of Sussex, this happened.
Since then, the trio has been detained, and their closed-door trial was conducted without the media or the government. They disputed any wrong at the trial.
According to their supporters, the groups they organized for Chinese youngsters to explore societal concerns were the source of the charges of insurrection.
Recently, Huang reported on Taiwanese# MeToo instances and the 2019 Hong Kong anti- state protests. She was detained by Chinese authorities for three weeks in the latter part of 2019.
China’s crackdown on opposition
The Chinese authorities frequently uses the accusation of “inciting subversion of state energy” against rebels. There is a maximum prison name of five years that can be extended if the offender is perceived as a leader or has committed serious crimes.
Both protesters were reportedly kept in solitary for several times by their supporters.
