On Friday nights, former president Donald J. Trump’s lawyers reacted in an aggressive and occasionally misguided manner in an effort to stop his open episodes on the F. B. I. officials who were tasked with the investigation into his classified records case in Florida.
In a 20- site court filing, the lawyers assailed prosecutors in the office of the particular counsel, Jack Smith, for seeking to reduce Mr. Trump’s remarks about the F. B. I. on the eve of two significant political events: the second national debate, scheduled for June 27, and the Republican National Convention, set to start on July 15.
The lawyers wrote that the activity is a blatant attempt to impose authoritarian repression of fundamental social conversation, which is threatened with imprisonment, in an apparent effort to silence President Trump’s claims about the outrageousness of this analysis and prosecution.
Mr. Smith’s staff asked Judge Aileen M. Cannon, who is in charge of the situation, to change Mr. Trump’s problems of release to prevent him from making any comment that may put agents at risk in the proceeding, which is when the conflict started next month.
The plea came days after Mr. Trump repeatedly claimed that the F. B. I. was ready to shoot him when agents carried out a seek warrant in Mar a Lago, his secret club and Florida house, in August 2022. In that hunt, the agents discovered more than 100 classified records. Mr. Trump is currently accused of illegally keeping confidential details and preventing the government from obtaining it.
The distortions resulted from the former president’s flagrant misinterpretation of a recently released order for the Mar-a-Lago search, which included boilerplate language meant to restrict the use of deadly pressure when agents execute warrants.
The F. B. I.’s other lots of orders directed agents to only use destructive force in situations of extreme risk, just like the one in the attempt. However, Mr. Trump and some of his supporters turned those restrictions on themselves, suggesting that Mar-a-Lago officials had been given the natural light to destroy him.
In their processing on Friday night, Mr. Trump’s lawyers gentle- pedaled his falsehoods, saying that he had only” criticized” the Mar- a- Petite search “in a manner that someone in the government disagreed with and does not enjoy”.
The attorneys baselessly attempted to relate the false accusations made by the prosecution this week that the F. B. I. failed to properly maintain the information in the 45 containers of documents that agents seized during the research of Mar-a-Lago to the prosecution’s attempt to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his false statements.
Despite the filing’s overheated language, Mr. Smith and his deputies may face a difficult task of persuading Judge Cannon to stop Mr. Trump from further abusing the F. B. I. by putting liberty on the line.
Although prosecutors have succeeded in granting Mr. Trump gag orders in other cases, this is their first attempt to obstruct his speech in the documents trial. In addition, according to his attorneys, prosecutors have n’t provided a single instance of an agent working on the documents case who has been threatened by Mr. Trump’s lies.
According to the attorneys,” President Trump and the defense are similarly unaware of any hostility, harassment, or risk of harm directed at any agent in this case based on President Trump’s statements.”
Still, Mr. Trump’s attacks on the F. B. I. have had consequences in the real world in the past.
An armed man in Ohio attempted to shoot his way into an F. B. I. field office near Cincinnati after Mr. Trump denounced the Mar- a- Lago search as a personal attack against him in 2022.
The man, Ricky W. Shiffer, said at the time that “patriots” should head to Florida to defend Mr. Trump and kill F. B. I. agents. In a shootout with the local police, Mr. Shiffer was ultimately killed.
In a separate incident, a Texas man was arrested on Thursday and accused of threatening to” slaughter” one of the F. B. I. agents who worked on the case that resulted in the conviction of Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son, on charges related to a gun purchase.
The agent was called to his cell phone hours after the guilty verdict was returned and informed him that Mr. Biden had not been prosecuted sufficiently. The man vowed to “hunt” the agent down and kill him and his family.
