Eight people were injured, two thoroughly, after an explosion of gunfire at a packed unexpected meeting in Methuen, Mass., according local authorities and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
According to Essex DA Paul Tucker, the shootings took place at a big” car club meet up” that hundreds of young people had organized via social media. He claimed that the participants range in age from soon youth to 22 years old.
At a press conference on Sunday night, Tucker stated,” We are working very hard to respond to a chaotic scene where gun violence is striking at the heart of the society.” State officers police have been on the field all day with Methuen officers and Methuen police, and we are working very hard.
Tucker noted that of the 7 victims who were shot, only two were firm and two were in critical condition. One victim required medical airlifting. Eight people were hurt in the mind as they fled the crime. The facilities that treated the victims did not receive any common information, as did the DA.
” This is still a very smooth investigation”, he said.
Considering the number of noises fired, Tucker said, “it’s quite amazing that more individuals were no hurt”.
” There were hundreds of people around” Tucker said.
The gunshot broke out at around 1: 55 a. m. in the area of 100 Lindberg Avenue, Methuen Police Chief Scott McNamara said. Officers responded to a “report of a shooting. We had received several 911 calls in that consider”.
Officers from Lawrence, Dracut, North Andover and soldiers with the Massachusetts State Police provided joint support during the first morning response, authorities said.
” The tragic events of last night have left us in a deep sense, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families. These acts of senseless violence do not fit the values of our community, McNamara said.
Tucker claimed that the violence occurred during a” social media, Snapchat event where people meet up” in remote areas of communities. He claimed that these kinds of events are occurring all over the county and the Merrimack Valley.
According to McNamara, spontaneous and unapproved car club gatherings do n’t typically result in violence, but even if they do, his department’s policy is to “take law enforcement action wherever necessary to stop this activity from occurring in the first place.”
Investigating officers have “very strong leads” and have gathered evidence, according to McNamara, but they do not yet have any details about a specific suspect to report or are aware of the circumstances that led to the shooting. The police have not recovered any firearms used in the shooting, the chief said, but have gathered casings from “many” fired rounds.
Tucker claimed that, given the size of the gathering, his office and the police department are both hoping the public will step up and fill in some gaps in what occurred early on Sunday morning.
” Six hundred of people were involved in this, and these were terrible crimes, not just for the people who received these gunshot wounds but also for their families and the local community as well. We are absolutely asking for help”, he said.
