N’DJAMENA: According to specialists and witnesses, explosions and fire at a military munitions depot in Chad’s money on Wednesday killed people and sparked frantic attempts to put out the fire and handle the injured.
The East African nation’s skies were lit up by the late Tuesday explosions at the depot in N’Djamena as heavy smoke covered the skies.
The fireplace” caused human and material damage”, President Mahamat Deby Itno posted on Twitter. ” Peace to the victims ‘ souls, sincere condolences to the victims ‘ families, and quick recovery for the injured,” the message is sent.
He did not give the number of mortality.
The chairman said an investigation may be conducted, but the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Folks living in the area panicked, thinking the blast was an armed attack, native Oumar Mahamat said.
According to government spokesman Abderaman Koulamallah, security and health officials were afterwards able to control the situation as a result of the area’s deployment, according to government spokesman Abderaman Koulamallah. He urged people to maintain quiet.
Local media reported that the explosions began just before nightfall and lasted for more than 30 minutes as near structures shook and ammunition was hurled from the station with explosive force.
Officials urged residents to stay away from the region, which had been taken over by security causes gathering the strewn artillery shells.
Allamine Moussa, a native, called on the state to” travel to our aid immediately”.
” Many people have recorded incidents and it’s sad”, Moussa said.
Before and after a contentious presidential election that resulted in Deby Itno’s success, the state of nearly 18 million people in Chad has been roiled by social unrest. He had oversaw the nation’s transition to democracy following his father’s 2021 passing.
Following new military coups in Burkinabe, Mali, and Niger, the United States and France consider the nation to be one of the last firm allies in Africa’s dangerous Sahel area south of the Sahara Desert.
