Melinda French Gates, the former spouse of Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates and a prominent American philanthropist, publicly endorsed President Joe Biden for the upcoming US in November on Thursday. In her statement on X, she emphasized Biden’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by women and families, making him the best candidate for their interests.
” I’ve always endorsed a political candidate before. But this year’s election stands to be so enormously consequential for women and families that, this time, I ca n’t stay quiet”, she said on X.
European Gates highlighted the importance of having a chief who prioritizes children’s security, health, economic strength, reproductive freedom, and their ability to constantly participate in a flourishing democracy. She emphasized that these concerns are crucial for women of paramount importance.
European Gates noted the dramatic differences between the two individuals and the higher stakes of this vote when comparing Biden to his Republican challenger, Donald Trump. She expressed her unwavering support for Biden, stating,” I will be voting for President Biden”.
Reproductive rights have grown to be a strong political tool for Democrats since the conservative-leaning Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2021, which had recently made abortion a constitutionally protected right.
According to considerable voting, a sizable majority of Americans believe that abortion should be legal in the majority of cases, and about half of states have put policies in place to protect access to contraception.
The issue of reproductive freedom has been a key focus throughout the electoral strategy. Trump has refrained from adopting a comprehensive position on the issue, rather expressing confidence in his appointment of three judges who played a part in overturning Roe v. Wade. Biden has regularly supported children’s right to choose.
French Gates made the announcement in May that she would use her substantial fortune, worth$ 2.5 billion, to help women and families, with a$ 1.6 billion initial donation. She attributed the Supreme Court’s decision regarding contraception to her decision to devote herself to defending children’s rights.
