The Justice Department was given the opportunity to launch a likely significant federal investigation into the bank’s management of consumer data after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sent a grievance against ByteDance Inc.’s TikTok.
The social media company’s investigation included inquiries into whether it had broken a separate law that forbids businesses from engaging in “unfair or false” business practices.
According to our analysis,” We have reason to believe that TikTok is in violation of or about to offend the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act,” said FTC Chair Lina Khan in a social media post on Tuesday.
The social media company’s investigation included inquiries into whether it had broken a separate law that forbids businesses from engaging in “unfair or false” business practices.
FTC members did not respond to comments calls right away.
In response, TikTok said they have been working with the FTC for more than a year to solve problems in a speech on social media. The business expressed disappointment that the firm is pursuing litigation rather than working with us on a fair solution. We are “proud of and firmly committed to the work we’ve done to protect children,” and we’ll keep updating and improving our goods.
TikTok has faced huge attention in the U. S. for decades over the relations between its family company, ByteDance, and the Chinese government. In April, Joe Biden passed a legislation that would forbid TikTok unless it was sold within a month. In court, the business is contesting the laws.
In a letter to the FTC in May, House members asked the company to investigate whether TikTok had violated children’s website safety laws by sending pop-up notifications asking users for their private information. They also urged them to call Congress regarding the TikTok ban.
TikTok paid$ 5.7 million in 2019 to settle the commission’s largest civil penalty in a children’s privacy case, in addition to the$ 5.7 million it received in response to FTC allegations that it had unlawfully collected personal information from children.
The organization continued to research the organization, according to the FTC’s statement.
The FTC stated in the statement that while the percentage does not usually make people the fact that a problem has been referred to, we have determined that doing so in this situation is in the common interest.
