A fresh poll shows the past and former presidents tied in a dead warmth with only over a week to go before their , second head- to- head debate , of the 2024 election cycle.
An , NPR/PBS News/Marist National Poll , released Tuesday shows both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump tied for support at 49 %. According to experts, Trump increases a slight 1 % advantage when the survey is only available to those who declare their intention to cast a ballot in November.
” While Biden has improved his ranking among politicians, Trump has widened his advantage among light electors”, experts wrote.
Biden’s support among independents, once at 42 % compared to Trump’s 54 %, now stands at 50 % against the 45th President’s 48 %. Biden’s 58 % support among non-white voters increased by about as much as he did, moving from an 11 % lead over Trump to 18 %, while Trump’s lead among white voters has increased from 6 points to 12 to now stand at 55 %.
According to Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College’s Institute for Public Opinion, Trump’s subsequent criminal conviction on 34 misdemeanor counts of falsifying his business information in the lead up to the 2016 poll is to blame for the growing spaces.
” Although the topline findings remain largely unchanged, there are still exciting developments going on. Since Trump’s criminal conviction in the New York hush money test, some common political trends have reemerged. Biden’s status has improved among separate and no- white voters, and Trump has secured greater support among light voters”, Miringoff said.
In a race that includes third- party candidates Robert Kennedy Jr., Jill Stein, Cornel West, and , Chase Oliver, Trump again takes the lead by a single point, with Biden losing out the most to other options.
Trump is supported by 42 % of registered voters nationwide, compared to 41 % for Biden. Kennedy has 11 % to 3 % for West, 1 % for Stein, and 1 % for Oliver. Similar numbers of Biden and Trump supporters back Kennedy. However, West, Stein, and Oliver pull a combined 7 % from Biden. Among Trump supporters, only Oliver receives 1 %”, pollsters wrote.
According to the poll, the majority of voters favor Biden on issues of abortion and “on who would better deal with preserving democracy,” while the majority favor Trump on those issues. Voters are divided on whether Biden or Trump best represents the United States on the global stage, despite the poll’s findings that suggest Biden cares more about the average person than Trump.
According to the poll, voters are most concerned about inflation this year, with 30 % saying they are most concerned about the cost of living while 29 % voted for a presidential candidate, and 18 % voted for immigration.
The poll found that the majority of voters are unsatisfied with the pair of major party candidates who were once more offered at the top of the ticket.
On June 27, CNN will host the first presidential debate.
