
BEIJING: Authorities in southwestern China’s Guangdong province issued a warning on Friday about additional flooding that would result in nine deaths and six missing in the region.
Four persons died and four are missing, in Meixian region in Guangdong’s Meizhou city, state broadcaster CCTV reported Thursday evening. Another five are dying in Jiaoling state, which is also in Meizhou.
The heavy rains fell on Sunday into Tuesday, causing branches to fall and cause residences to collapse. During the big rains, a path leading to Meixian region completely collapsed. The Songyuan valley, which winds through Meizhou, experienced its biggest recorded disaster, according to CCTV.
The estimated direct economic loss is 3.65 billion yuan ($ 502 million ) in Jiaoling county, while in Meixian district, the loss is 1.06 billion yuan ($ 146 million ).
