At a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Marc Knapper on Thursday in Hanoi, Vietnam’s new leader To Lam stated that he wants to eventually strengthen ties with the United States in terms of security and defense.

Vietnam and the U. S. may step up cooperation in areas such as computer stability, preventing violence and international crimes, Lam said, according to a speech on Vietnam’s federal website.

Vietnam last year demanded that a Chinese naval study fleet, the Hai Yang 26, stop “illegal” actions in Vietnam’s waters, according to a speech on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, citing director Lin Thu Hang during a June 6 presentation.

According to the statement, the president suggested that the two countries strengthen diplomatic ties in places like trade and investment. Lam even pleaded for ongoing American assistance to help Vietnam deal with the effects of the conflict between the two nations, including climate change.
