As an aside, why are democratic cities like Paris consistently among the filthy in the world? They almost seem to consider the Big Green they are preaching and making a forceful use of.  ,
The concern: the classic Seine River is teeming with bad microbes, and Olympians participating in available- water events, including the race, are slated to swim in it, risking their health and maybe their lives.  ,

Last weekend, Emmanual Macron and Anne Hidalgo, the president of France and Paris, were supposed to swim in the polluted river to show their support for the clean-up effort, but that has been postponed. ( Could n’t they at least find a low- level staffer to dip a toe into the sewage- laden waters? ) Incidentally, or perhaps ironically, former French President Jacques Chirac vowed to swim in the Seine amid cleanup efforts some 30 years ago. That never happened, either. But hey, they’ve flushed billions of euros down the crapper, so at least they ‘re , doing something. ( Narrator: that” something” is making themselves feel superior to the rest of us while they fly around the world in private jets. )
A quick search on social media revealed a number of Parisians performing the dirty deed in the Seine, but I’m sure many of them are AI-generated. At least, I hoped so. I will spare you the gag- inducing tweets.  ,

In any case, the river’s bacteria levels are a significant issue, and it’s not clear whether anything can be done to prepare it for the Olympics in time. The triathlon could end up being converted to a duathlon, as it has been done in some recent competitions, which would undoubtedly be devastating to athletes who have spent years training for that particular event.  ,
