One of Ukraine’s leading generals was fired from his position on Monday amid widespread criticism that the commander’s actions had resulted in excessive casualties.
The departure of the common, Yurii Sodol, as the combined forces commander of the military forces was a clear sign that the conflict that had tarnished the military since Zelenskyy replaced Valery Zaluzhny with Gen Oleksandr Syrsky in February is still a threat to military cohesion. Brig. Gen. Andrii Hnatov will succeed Sodol, according to Zellenskyy. Zelenskyy did not explain why he had dismissed the captain or what place he would then carry when Sodol was appointed by General Syrsky as part of a broader shake-up in February.
The president’s announcement came after Bohdan Krotevych, the chief of staff for the Azov regiment, a Ukrainian National Guard regiment, wrote to the State Bureau of Investigation to request an investigation into the commander’s behavior. Finally, just hours before the president’s dismissal, Krotevych posted an unusually harsh and scathing opened letter on social media, indirectly accusing the standard of, through his weak leadership, “killing more Russian soldiers than any Soviet general”. Krotevych suggested that all of Ukraine’s makes knew to whom he was referring, even though he did not name Sodol straight in the open email. He wrote,” Everyone in the government understands because 99 % of the military hates him for what he does.”
