Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi’s appeal for a sentence suspension in a situation involving a violation of Muslim law governing union was rejected by a region and sessions courtroom in Pakistan’s capital city on Thursday.
A trial judge ruled on February 3 that Imran’s Pakistan Tehreek e-Insaf’s election victory was solemn without following the agreed iddat. The pair received a seven-year prison sentence.
The complaint was filed by Bushra Bibi’s ex- father, Khawar Fareed Maneka, alleging that his estranged wife did not wait three months, as required under Islamic rules after divorce or a relative’s dying, before marrying afterwards.
Maneka claimed to have divorcé his family in November 2017. Imran made the announcement to marry Bushra Bibi in February 2018, some times before he became prime minister.
Thursday’s ruling drew criticism from Imran’s group, which called it “absolutely ridiculous”. A court was established for Imran’s test after protests and party workers staged demonstrations outside Adiala prison.
MP Omar Ayub Khan promised to appeal the decision in a higher judge.
The group claimed in a blog on X that Pakistan already had its verdict “profoundly condemned and humiliated.”
” Everyone responsible for manufacturing and carrying this event will go down in the filthy, darkest alleys of history,” it said.
Since his removal from the excellent ministership through a no-confidence vote in parliament in April 2022, Imran has been battling a slew of charges, including corruption and violence.
He was sentenced in two different situations, including the Toshakhana (state bank ), and has been in jail since August of last year. He received parole in another situation earlier this month and was cleared of all charges in the cipher case involving the acquittal of a charge related to the 2022 leaking of a defined cable to Islamabad by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington.
Imran is still imprisoned despite being found guilty and receiving a sentence in the iddat situation.
