Start to freshmen, may grow to students in 2025
Georgetown University, a Catholic organization, announced plans to begin offering “gender- diverse cover” to students this fall after students passed a vote calling for the change.
Then, when new students apply for on- school accommodation, the school survey will ask about “gender diverse” options, according to a” Home Changes” announcement on its website.
” New individuals can indicate that they identify as transgender, non-binary, or sex non-conformist people looking for gender inclusive housing, or that they are welcoming and affirming of LGBTQ people and want to be regarded as a potential roommate for individuals seeking sex inclusive housing,” it states.
The GU Student Association praised the new “gender diverse cover policies” on its Instagram webpage and attributed the change to the election held in April.
” This initiative could not have been successful without the]overwhelming ] support of the student body and members from GUSA, @gupride, @qpocgu and other organizations on campus”, the association stated in a June post.
The Jesuit Catholic University was ordered to accept pupils of the preferred gender in” spots most comfortable and supportive of them,” according to the vote, which was passed by the student body by 91 percentage.
Georgetown mentioned the election in its statement, saying that “undergraduate students affirmed the importance of this work and the thought of potential steps to help a home climate that is inclusive for all students.”
The shift only applies to freshmen because, according to the student association, the majority of upperclassmen now have housing arrangements made by this point.
But, GUSA leaders stated that they are pursuing an agreement with officials to expand “inclusive cover for all individuals with a goal of Fall 2025 .”
The Hoya pupil paper information:
A] university spokesperson stated that during the upcoming cover collection cycle, Georgetown will aim to have a similar question on all undergraduate casing surveys.
According to a school director, the university now works with trans, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming students to find housing options on a situation by case basis.
A university spokesperson told The Hoya,” Georgetown University is committed to creating an inclusive, safe, and welcoming campus for all members of our community across all gender and sexual identities.” Students have a right to housing that conforms to their gender identity.
A Catholic institution, Georgetown’s mission is to provide “excellent undergraduate, graduate and professional education in the Jesuit tradition for the glory of God and the well- being of humankind”.
However, the university has faced pushback from some students and alumni who say it has strayed from its mission on issues like gender, marriage, and abortion.
The Catholic Church teaches that a man and a woman can marry only once. It also teaches people cannot change their sex, and “any sex- change intervention, as a rule, risks threatening the unique dignity the person has received from the moment of conception”.
