After judges deadlocked in the case without a selection despite more than 26 hours of deliberation, a Massachusetts prosecutor in the US declared Karen Read’s murder trial “mistrial.”
After the jury sent information to Cannone saying they were terribly divided, the court reached this conclusion. The prosecutor delivered Tuey- Rodriguez guidelines — often referred to as “dynamite” guidelines intended to blast apart divided juries in Massachusetts, the Washington Post reported.
The business of Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey announced that they intend to try the case shortly after Judge Beverly J. Cannone ordered a trial.
The prosecutors said in a statement,” First, we thank the O’Keefe family for their commitment and dedication to this long process. They continued to focus on the real meaning of this circumstance, namely, finding justice for John O’Keefe. The Commonwealth plans to re-try the event, according to AP.
Karen Read, the attorney, was drinking with her companion O’Keefe before dropping him off at a gathering at the home of other officer Brian Albert when she was accused of noisily driving into her police officer boyfriend in January of that year and leaving him to death in January of that year. They claimed that she drove ahead after hitting him with her SUV.
The defense attorneys tried to portray her as the target in the case while the prosecution was accusing her of being responsible for Keefe’s suicide. According to the defense, Keefe was killed inside Albert’s home before being dragged inside and left for dead, according to Washington Post.
They claimed Read was the focus of the investigation because she was a” easy stranger” who prevented them from taking into account Albert and other law enforcement officers present at the party.
After the lawyers said that they will are- test, defense attorney Alan Jackson said,” They failed. They failed badly, and they’ll continue to fail… No matter how long it takes, no matter how much they keep trying, we will not prevent fighting”, AP reported.
The test, which lasted for two weeks, centered around authorities procedures and the relationships between those involved. Law enforcement officials acknowledged attempting to remove snow to break up data using a leaf blower and obtaining body data using red vinyl cups. Additionally, the principal investigator admitted to using his phone to send inappropriate messages about Read.
Read was accused of second-degree murder, which carries a possible life sentence with the possibility of probation in Massachusetts. Moreover, she was accused of lesser acts, including manslaughter while driving under the influence, which is punishable by five to 20 years in prison, and fleeing the scene of a catastrophic accident, which can result in a statement of up to 10 years.
