The accused of stabbing author Salman Rushdie in a 2022 strike at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York declined a plea bargain on Tuesday that would have reduced his position jail sentence and put him on a national terrorism-related cost. Matar has been detained without bail since the affair, where he allegedly stabbed Rushdie several times, causing severe injury, including blindness in one vision, just as Rushdie was about to give a presentation, according to the accused’s attorney Nathaniel Barone.
The proposed arrangement, presented in Mayville, New York, had had required 26- yr- old Matar to plead guilty in Chautauqua County to attempted murder, with a reduced maximum state prison term of 20 years rather of 25. Also, Matar did had pleaded guilty to a national charge of attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist business, which could possibly put another 20 years to his word, as per lawyers involved.
Rushdie is referred to as a witness for Matar’s upcoming trial, where the details of the case are anticipated to come into focus.
Hadi Matar, who was born in the United States and holds dual citizenship in Lebanon, reportedly underwent behavior modifications following a 2018 visit to his father, according to his mother’s reports.
