The crisis and alleviation ministry said on Tuesday that flooding in Bangladesh has caused tens of thousands of people to flee their homes and shut schools, and that the situation is expected to increase as more heavy rain is forecast over the coming days.
More than 600 health teams have been set up to address flood victims, according to the government, and about 40, 000 people have found refuge in government buildings.
Television footage showed littered roads, broken roads and dams, as well as locals wading through knee-deep waters. Producers were also forced to rescue animals from the swollen waters.
Liakath Ali, head of the climate change programme at growth company BRAC, said:” Bangladeshis are used to flooding, but the water is rising so great and so fast in low-lying places that people are being forced to house on anyone, even rafts made of fruit trees.”
The central and southern regions are expected to experience more rain, but the enlarged Brahmaputra creek is expected to disappear in the coming days.
” The American inland region’s heavy rains mean that the battling is far from over. We have taken steps to cope with the situation”, said Rezwanul Rahman, the mind of Bangladesh’s crisis management office.
Annual rainfall rains that begin at the end of May have caused widespread flooding in India and the neighboring Bangladesh in recent years.
Floods have started receding in India’s Assam, located northwest of Bangladesh, officials said, bringing some relief to the 48, 000 or but people sheltering in tents. During the last 24 hrs, six people died due to rain and flood-related instances, raising the death toll to 72 in the position since May.
More than 2 million people have been affected by the Assam storms. The Kaziranga National Park, home to the unique one-horned rhinoceros, was likewise inundated.
A heavy rainstorm early on Tuesday in Delhi’s National Capital Region and its suburbs slowed visitors, and only over a year prior, exceptionally heavy rains in the investment New Delhi caused a dome at the airport terminal to decline. Big storms flooded streets and railroad lines in Mumbai this year, causing delays to flights and requiring schools to close.
